What actually changes in the PMP 2026 ECO.
PMI is retiring the 2021 Exam Content Outline on 8 July 2026. Starting 9 July, new test-takers sit a different exam. Most of the articles you'll read on this frame it as a huge change. It is and it isn't. Here's the actual delta.
Domain weights, before and after.
The three top-level domains keep their names. The weights move.
- People: 42% to 33%
- Process: 50% to 41%
- Business Environment: 8% to 26%
The headline is Business Environment going from 8% to 26%. Three times its old footprint. That one domain alone accounts for roughly 47 of the 180 questions instead of 14.
What Business Environment now covers.
The new ECO pushes into areas the old exam barely tested:
- AI-tool selection and governance on projects
- Sustainability and ESG reporting as a project constraint
- Value delivery as a measurement, not just scope delivery
- Organizational change fatigue and psychological safety
- Cross-jurisdiction regulatory shifts affecting a project mid-flight
Most of the new questions are still scenario-based, still reward the PMI-approved behavior (engage stakeholders, make it a constraint, update the governance board), but the situations themselves involve AI copilots, emission targets, and ESG audits.
What stays the same.
Servant leadership, stakeholder engagement, tailoring, and hybrid governance are still the backbone of People and Process. If you've prepped for the 2021 ECO and are sitting the exam before 8 July, you'll recognize most questions on the old exam as unchanged.
What to do if you're on the fence.
If your exam is booked before 8 July, practice the 2021 ECO. Switching material now costs time you don't have.
If your exam is after 9 July, practice the 2026 ECO. Business Environment is 26% of your points now. Don't skim it.
If you haven't booked yet and your work schedule is flexible, you'll pay 555 USD before August and 675 USD after. Book before the fee hike.
